Lolita the Blue and Gold Macaw
The blue-and-gold macaw is a beautiful bird known for its stunning visual appeal. Its social nature makes it a wonderful companion for families. It is also very good in socializing and is quick to learn new phrases and tricks.

Lolita’s Personality
Macaws are a great companion bird. They are incredibly affectionate and intelligent. They thrive in well-rounded families. They are prone to becoming bored and will seek out other ways to entertain themselves if their owners do not interact with them enough. Macaws that aren't socialized may become aggressive and even bite. It is important to have clear boundaries set to ensure that the macaw does feel threatened.
In general, Blue and Gold Macaws are lively birds that are fond of playing, climbing and interact. They need to spend at least 2 to 3-hours a day outdoors to stimulate their minds and get physical exercise. They enjoy playing games, learning tricks, and listening to music. They also love playing in parks and playgrounds while hiking, and also visiting local restaurants and bars. They are not just a wonderful pet, but they are is also a great pet for children.
These birds can be very loud, despite their adoration for their mate. They can also be a nuisance to those who live nearby. They can make ear-shattering calls and screeches which could be disruptive to those who live in condos or apartments.
Another interesting characteristic of this particular species is that it is monomorphic, meaning males and females are hard to differentiate. Because of this, the only way to identify sex is through DNA testing. Once sex is known pairing of the birds can be attempted and breeding can begin.
Like all pets, Blue and Gold Macaws require training to master commands, phrases and tricks. This is a long process, and the pet's owner has to be patient and understand that this is a tough task. Positive reinforcement can help speed up the process and help to correct any behavioral issues.
Lolita's care
Since the 1960s, activists have been pleading for Lolita to stop performing tricks at Miami Seaquarium. They also would like her to be relocated to an open-water pen. Following the 1993 film Free Willy sparked public outrage over the reintegration of orca Keiko into the wild, those who fought for her hoped that Lolita would have a similar fate. Unfortunately, she didn't get a chance to return to the sea.

In 2022, a new owner of Miami Seaquarium, who calls Lolita as a cousin of theirs, promised to work on plans with a group of Lolita supporters, known as Friends of Toki, and the Lummi Tribe to transport her to eventually open water. The plan would have included a facility located on the west coast of Washington where she could live for the rest of her life, receive human care and be monitored by researchers. The sanctuary pen was planned to be hundreds of times bigger than her Miami house and surrounded by ocean, not concrete tanks.
If the plan was implemented, Lolita (also known as Tokitae or Toki) could be alive today. In the wild, killers whales are social animals who bond with their family members until death. Lolita has lived isolated at Seaquarium for over 40 years. Many activists across the country, including Ric O'Barry (former Flipper trainer), Empty The Tanks and Orca Network, have called for her retirement from Seaquarium's stage, and her eventual release into the wild.

Lolita's Diet
As with any animal species, a captive blue and gold macaw's health is based on a healthy diet. They require premium food items, and plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables, as well as whole grains. A macaw that is well-fed in captivity could live up to 60 years. Additionally, this magnificent bird requires plenty of space to fly around and exercise.

Lolita's Health

She has been battling chronic illnesses and a crippling infection that has left her in a vulnerable condition.
The Dolphin Company, which now owns the Miami Seaquarium and is owned by the Dolphin Company has not provided any details regarding the condition of Lolita. However, the non-profit organization Friends of Toki has provided monthly updates about her health and well-being on their website. These updates reveal that Toki is ageing rapidly and her health has deteriorated.
As her captor does not need to reveal this information, it is not clear what specific health issue the orca is suffering from. However, a repository of necropsies from Sea World that was created by the Orca Project shows that kidney disease is a common cause in the death of captive orcas.
Despite the ongoing health concerns of Lolita Many people believe that she could be closer than ever before to a wild life. Seaquarium's new owner Seaquarium has stated his commitment to move the whale out of her tank into her native waters in the Pacific.
After years of pressure from PETA and others, the Miami Seaquarium has finally released Lolita to a seaside sanctuary where she can swim deep in the water and perhaps be reconnect with her orca mother. Sadly these plans came late for the whale that was so beloved, who passed away on Friday due to what was believed to be a renal problem.
